Personality

Nusuvi is described by some of her kin as being angular and cold, like ice. She is strong-willed, level-headed, and does not give her sympathy easily. Although her dedication to efficiency, justice, and the guard's code makes her seem distant, she feels a deeply connected to those kin around her and lives to protect them. Nusuvi shuts down the advances of male chromatic so easily and with so little guilt, many are unsure if she’s even aware she that she does it. As far as friendships and connections are concerned, Nusuvi goes for all-or-nothing. Either someone is her friend and gets from her undying loyalty and dedication, or they’re just another acquaintance. She does what she can to treat everyone with the appropriate level of reason and respect.

In contrast to this, however, Nusuvi has a heart swayed somewhat easily by emotional matters. For all of her self-control and rigidity, she often fails to control or understand the movement of her own heart, or that of others. Although she does not easily fall in love with others, she respects the seemingly irrational commitments others make to each-other, despite not always understanding why.

Goals

Nusuvi has the best interest of her kin at heart, determined to protect them, foster growth, and uphold the laws and traditions of her people in whatever way possible. When these things come into conflict, she would betray the law and tradition rather then the well being of her people.

History

Nusuvi is the daughter of a respected and admired chromatic commander. Her mother, who was a decent gaurd in her prime, died due to complications surrounding Nusuvi’s birth. Although her father did what he could to provide Nusuvi with strong female role-models and opportunities for her femininity to blossom, the young girl always seemed more interested in hanging among the guards, speaking to and learning from them. In her youth she greatly admired Kuriruvu, and had the unparalleled pleasure of training under him. She showed great strength and self-control in her fighting, and became one of Kuriruvu's students. Although it was some number of years between the time that Kuriruvu became Korirava and Nusuvi became a guard, it was his original recommendation that inspired the other Vu-Kukunu to initiate her as a Vu-Kunu before she came of the proper age.

Development

Introduction

Nusuvi is the first Vu-Yunu the party meet, at the beginning of Act 2 - she leads the team of guards that drive off the final desperate attempt by Korirava's Vu-Koko to murder the party before they can reach the compound. She escorts them to the compound, demonstrating prowess by helping them fend of the remaining fragments of the attack.

She stays close to the largest subgroup of the party, generally protecting them and, by extension, seeming to make friends with them by being completely trustworthy. Though the players are encouraged to read this as earnest companionship from Nusuvi, her motivation is is actually more like the relationship a compassionate rancher has with their herd. The cultural difference between humanoids and the Chromatic make her motivations easy to misinterpret. The party's optimistic interpretation of this relationship is Vokovi's first clue that humanoids might not be exactly the chattel that he was taught that they are.

Within the Dream

Because of the trust relationship she has built with the party and the belief that she will be able to keep Vokovi focused, Nusuvi is chosen to lead the party through the Vault of the Revenant in an attempt to find and rescue James Haller. During this quest, amongst many other things, she relays the story of Rebel General Korirava from the Vu-Yunu's point of view, explaining that it was he to lead the attempt to kill the party, and he that attempted to kidnap one of them that first night in the compound.

Nusuvi is adored by Vokovi, and she is not above using that in order to keep him focused on the real task at hand - the quest is just a Dream Feast and he can't be allowed to reveal that fact to the party/players.

During the quest, as Vokovi grows in his understanding of the nature of humanoids, he attempts to convince Nusuvi of what he suspects. Their conversations, if overheard by the party are masked by his power: The players are lead to believe that they are arguing about his taking care of some animals he has back in his den, and/or that he is teasing her about a made-up relationship he wishes they had - “V:When we get married, instead of taking out Parrotbeaks for a walk, they'll sit and squawk with us all day long”. “N:That's stupid. Why would I marry you? And besides, you know that Parrotbeaks can't talk!”

Relationships

  • Vokovi - Vokovi is a test of Nusuvi’s patience. Although she is at least partially aware of how important she is to Vokovi, she finds his innocence and vulnerability difficult to deal with, at times. He challenges her all-or-nothing mentality, as she cannot seem to decide if he’s a irreplaceable friend or merely another body to protect. Faced with this indecision, Nusuvi goes between holding her tongue, as she would with an acquaintance, and speaking her mind as she would with a friend - which in the case of Vokovi, often comes across as criticism designed to re-ground him in reality. And since Vokovi is as stubborn and more easily hurt then she is, arguments spark from time to time. In matters of the heart, Nusuvi respects Vokovi’s conclusions and decisions more then she does her own.
  • Riri - Vokovi's pet parrot-beak. Although it's rather petty, Nusuvi puts on a thinly veiled front of disliking and disapproving of Riri and Vokovi's attachment to her. Nusuvi fools no-one with the attitude, as she always seems to have a few of Riri's favorite nuts handy when she meets Vokovi. Why she bothers to make excuses for giving a pet a treat is beyond the comprehension of most. “Riri looks very thin. Vokovi, you mustn't starve your pets, it's irresponsible. Must I do everything for you?”
  • Kuriruvu - Nusuvi was young and impressionable when Kuriruvu was at his peak, a respected and well-loved hero among the people. She was one of many girls and women who had quite an attraction to him, although Nusuvi also had great respect for his political prowess and sheer combative power. For a time she would demand again and again to hear the story of how- in her infancy- Kuriruvu kissed her temple, and turned to his comrades to predict she would become a great warrior. Nusuvi still uses the special combat skills she learned from Kuriruvu, and continues to recall the chromatic he once was, somehow excusing his eventual fall from grace.
  • Korirava - Although completely aware of Kuriruvu's fall from grace, Nusuvi may be surprised to actually come to meet Korirava and experience his broken nature first-hand. As her rosy memories and constructed fantasies about her roll-model are shattered, Nusuvi may come to better realize the serious nature of the problems with the way of the civilized chromatic.
  • Yorovu - One of her teachers in youth, Yorovu was perhaps the closest things Nusuvi had to a mother. Nusuvi has affection and respect for Yorovu. Upon discovering Yorovu's deception, Nusuvi made be upset, but ultimately understanding of what her elder intended and was attempting with her lies.
